Awards and Achievements

As an instructor of Interior Design at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, Richard received the “Instructor of the Year” award from 2006-2009. He has also guest lectured for the University Of California Los Angeles Master’s Degree program for interior design. Richard’s exposure to aspiring interior designers inspired him to start a mentoring program. Interior Design Authority [IDA] is a collaborative effort between Richard and designers starting their careers, with the goal of providing assistance from start to completion of their design projects.

Richard was featured in the Pasadena Showcase House in 2004 and 2006 and House for Hope Showcase in Lake Sherwood in 2005. He made multiple appearances on HGTV’s Designer’s Challenge series. Richard Charles Custom Upholstered Furniture manufactured a complete line of furniture pieces designed by Richard. More recently, Richard has been working with Brizo. He designed a bathroom display in 2014 which is used in their trade show appearances throughout the United States. A separate unique master bathroom display was built and used for Brizo’s print advertising campaign in 2015. In 2016 Brizo has asked him to participate as a panel member to discuss the future trends of kitchens, bathrooms and interior design.

A book titled “RENOVATE, SUSTAIN AND SURVIVE” was written and self-published in 2012 by Richard W. Herb. Richard’s passion for the execution of the design process shines through in this book and is certainly a recommended read for someone getting ready to start a renovation.
